seaweed (pua o ke kai) women's tee- faded black
description
a premium heavyweight tee where seaweed becomes a state of mind. pua o ke kai, the flower of the sea, drifting up the water column with her eyes closed and not one care left to give.
in the front and center is a sea goddess in an elevated state, rendered in gold leaf and ink, her hair coming apart into limu and pakalolo, framed by two panels of psychedelic island art nouveau in rust, deep ocean blue, and ember orange.
this features the men’s relaxed fit tee styled on a woman.
design notes: a feminine figure rising out of a single strand of seaweed, hair becoming limu, frond becoming pakololo, the ambiguity is the whole point. swirling currents pull from art nouveau and old psychedelic poster work, gold against black against ocean color. an elevated, unbothered serenity runs through the piece, dignified and quiet, never loud. clean from a distance, weirder and more rewarding the closer you get. finished with the kailua hi woven sleeve label. what she is the flower of is yours to decide.
feel
100% carded cotton, 7.1 oz heavyweight, 16-singles, garment dyed for a faded, lived-in finish. soft but substantial, broken in from the first wear. the faded black gives the print that washed, already-loved look, like a shirt you have owned for years and only just found again.
fit
men's boxy oversized fit, with a body cut roughly 2 inches shorter than our standard heavy tee, so it sits square and a little cropped. dropped shoulders, wide neck ribbing with twin stitching, side seamed with shoulder to shoulder tape, preshrunk to hold its shape. take your usual size for an oversized fit, size down to bring it closer to a more standard women's fit.
inspiration
this one started with a name. seaweed. the quiet double meaning of a plant that grows toward the light and slows time down.
so we gave it a face. pua o ke kai, the flower of the sea. pua can also mean child so both parts of the name of this tee have a double meaning. a feminine figure rising out of the kelp with her eyes closed, her hair unraveling into limu and pakalolo. she is not performing serenity. she is just there, elevated, faintly amused that you are still down here.
the brand's whole double meaning, kailua and the state of mind, compresses into a single face. she is the flower of the sea and a child of the sea.
